Shot 01

Zap Cola Commercial

Short film created by Benoit McCollough. Manually wrapped the drink label around the blank can on every frame. Luma-keyed the can and placed the result back over the top of the label to preserve highlights. Rotoscoped highly motion-blurred fingers which obscured the label on the can.

Shot 02

Lisa

Short film directed and produced by Matthew Ramsaur. Required to "black out" the actors' eyes. Created an alien eye texture, which was tracked and rotoscoped to match the movements of each eye. Shadows painted and animated to match scene lighting. Luma key pulled on actors' eyes to preserve specular highlights.

Shot 03

Resistance

Proof-of-concept trailer for an upcoming Australian television series, directed by Andrew Dillon. Keyed out shot of actor with fine hair detail. Recreated the original background from on-set photography. Created a unique invisibility effect to match storyboard drawings. Added fake lighting on nearby objects when actor lights up.

Shot 04

Resistance

Proof-of-concept trailer for an upcoming Australian television series, directed by Andrew Dillon. Animated the speedometer to match the revs. Removed handbrake warning lights. Replaced on-board computer screen with custom text.

Shot 05

Miracle Fish

Term challenge at fxphd. Keyed out actor, preserving fine details in hair and transparency in clothing. Composited explosion stock footage onto the background plate, adding additional smoke elements, fake lighting and heat distortion to sell the effect. Matched the rack focus, and applied it to all elements. Tracked the fairy into the shot, adding wings and animating to the specified requirements.

Shot 06

Resistance

Proof-of-concept trailer for an upcoming Australian television series, directed by Andrew Dillon. Keyed out actor, and composited her into a space scene. Added additional layers of stars and offset them in Z-space to give the shot more depth. Added flares to the light sources.

Shot 07

Beaming In

Personal Project. Recreated teleportation effects from the latest Star Trek film. Removed actor to create a clean plate. Created a unique displacement map, which was use to displace the background as the actor fades in. Used 2 different particle systems travelling along a similar path to add depth.

Shot 08

Beaming In

Personal Project. Composited a custom UI onto the iPhone screen. Manually corner-pinned the screen with hidden corners. Desaturated and Luma-keyed the screen to preserve reflections. Rotoscoped thumb and rock to place them back on top.

Shot 09

Resistance

Proof-of-concept trailer for an upcoming Australian television series, directed by Andrew Dillon. Removed flailing wire from in front of crumpled shirt and hair. Re-animated actor flying backwards to appear more forceful. Added an "energy ripple" to sell the effect.

Shot 10

Robot Attack

Personal Project. Luma-keyed the sky, put mountains in the background. Composited multi-pass render of robot into the scene and colour corrected it. Manually placed shadows on the ground to be more accurate than the render. Added laser bullets and heat distortion, then glowed the appropriate areas.

Shot 11

FXPHD Material

Term challenge at fxphd. Keyed out actors, maintaining fidelity in the glass and hair. Hand-painted out track markers as they would not key well. Tracked the scene, and used 3D geometry to create an accurate matte for the table. Composited 3D-rendered background and robot into the scene. Colour corrected everything to match. Added glows and light wraps to appropriate elements.

Shot 12

Duel of Champions

Short film directed and produced by Harrison Bahe. Dealt with poor de-interlacing and heavy artifacting. Keyed out the sky, and additionally luma-keyed the clouds. Created and animated a matte painting of a "maelstrom in the clouds". 3D-tracked the scene without much information or any track markers, then composited the elements together.
